What is a certificate of analysis, and why is it so important?
A certificate of analysis, or COA for short, is a document from an accredited lab that shows the concentrations and varieties of cannabinoids present in a product. Certificates of analysis are important and should be included with every CBD purchase because:
- They ensure that the product you’re receiving contains advertised levels of CBD.
- They tell authorities that your product is federally legal hemp and not a federally-prohibited cannabis product.
- Depending on how your product is advertised— full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, THC-free, etc.— the presence of additional cannabinoids in your product may interest you for a variety of reasons.
- In addition to the potency of ingredients, the COA is vital for consumers to determine whether or not the product is free from harmful contaminants such as molds and bacteria. Hemp is naturally a bioaccumulator, meaning it easily absorbs substances from the earth. That might include pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
- USDA and State guidelines require that all products be tested. If there is no COA available it is not recommended consume or buy the product.
